Reduce Your Air Conditioner Repair Risks During Above Average Temps

(PHOENIX) We’re approaching the hottest temperatures so far this year and we could even hit our first 100-degree day year this weekFamily-owned Donley AC & Plumbing is sharing the most common issues homeowners face as they turn on cooling systems for a new season.

Short Cycling

• This is when your AC shuts down and restarts too often.
• A professional can determine whether it’s a bad capacitor, compressor, thermostat, electrical problem or other issue.

Uneven Cooling

• If you notice ‘hot spots’ in different parts of your house you could have damaged ductwork, a mechanical problem, or even an incorrect size air conditioning unit.

Loud Unit

• All ACs make noise but you shouldn’t hear screeching, clanging or grinding gears.
• Different sounds can indicate different problems with the motor, fan, belt or compressor. The sooner you catch and repair, the better.

High Electrical Bills

• Exceptionally high bills can be a key indicator of AC trouble.
• Clogged filters and a damaged compressor can force the Ato work overtime and struggle to produce cold air.

Old Unit

• Although the Environmental Protection Agency says the average air conditioner lasts 15 to 20 years, in Arizona we generally experience a shorter life span – closer to 12 to 15 years.
• Regardless of age, properly maintained units that are checked annually by qualified technicians last the longest and run the most efficiently during our summers.

The experts at Donley are available to discuss and demonstrate the following advice:

Change your air filter

• Our dry, dusty climate can quickly clog your filter, which can lead to higher energy bills and more repairs. During AC season, it’s a good idea to clean or replace your filter every month.

Hose down your compressor outside

• Our winter rain and winds can bring debris and mud. If it gets caught in the compressor it can affect the efficiency of the AC unit.

Check Insulation and Airflow

• Make sure the airflow from your AC unit through your ducts is free of obstruction.
