Queen Creek Science Teacher Wins CenturyLink Grant

A seventh-grade science teacher at Queen Creek Middle School in the Queen Creek Unified School District has been selected to receive a grant from CenturyLink for her efforts in advancing scientific learning in K-12 schools.

Diane Maynard was selected for full funding from the corporation after submitting an application for the 2017-2018 Teachers and Technology Grant program. Mrs. Maynard received almost $5,000 from CenturyLink to use for strengthening science lessons, particularly in the Queen Creek Middle School science program. Diane is one of 27 Arizona teachers to receive the grant.

The money presented to Mrs. Maynard will be used for a project called ‘Technology with Geology’ which includes creating an outdoor field-testing kit used for K-8 learning. The kit will contain digital microscopes, tablets, Chromebooks, and PH soil testers. The goal of the kit is to increase the rigor of science and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) lessons throughout the district.

Brandon Yergey, the Market Development Manager for CenturyLink’s Central Region, said Maynard’s application was chosen “specifically because of its merit, content and opportunity for advancement of K-12 learning.” According to Yergey, the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation has been awarding educators who desire to utilize technology in classrooms since 2008, as part of a belief that “STEM education is critical to meeting the demands of a rapidly changing workplace and developing the talented and well-prepared workforce of tomorrow.”
