Queen Creek Middle School HOSA Students Give Back to Community

The holidays are here which means family, friends, and food. However, for some families, food can be hard to come by during the holidays. As a way to give back to the Queen Creek community, the Queen Creek Middle School (QCMS) student HOSA club held a canned food drive in November to help the Queen Creek Family Resource Center (FRC). The QCFRC used the food cans collected to build holiday meal boxes for families in need.

To advertise the food drive, students made posters and produced campus announcements encouraging fellow classmates to donate non-perishable food items. The initial goal of the 10-day drive was one-thousand cans which came out to about one canned food item per student. However, students surpassed that goal and raised a grand total of 1298 cans of food.

“It was neat that everyone worked together for those in need,” said Amy Mallo, a 1st-year HOSA member. “Being able to do this as part of the HOSA club made it very fun.”

HOSA-Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), is a national career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. According to the QCMS HOSA advisor, Mr. Rob O’Rourke, the purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness, and recognition.

The Queen Creek Middle School chapter is focusing on community service and citizenship this year. Students who promoted, collected, delivered, and organized food earned volunteer hours towards the coveted Barbara James award. For their next club project, HOSA students will work to create public service announcements designed to increase the health of students. Some topics up for discussion include vaping, nutrition, exercise, and stress management.

As an innovative, national leader in education, Queen Creek Unified School District inspires and empowers each student to achieve excellence in all pursuits, embrace social and individual responsibility and lead with integrity.
