Queen Creek High School Students Encourage Sustainability

By Morgan Charboneau, FCCLA QCHS chapter treasurer:

Queen Creek High School (QCHS) students helped the community get in the Halloween spirit early this year, and they did it in a very sustainable way. On September 23rd, Queen Creek hosted its annual Founder’s Day celebration at Founder’s Park. Among the fun, food, and games of the event stood an area called the Sustainability Square, where groups could set up booths that would encourage environmental friendliness. QCHS students in the Career and Technical Student Organization called FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) organized a booth where kids and families could stop by to decorate their very own trick-or-treat bags. These bags were unique in that they were made from completely reusable grocery/garbage bags and sewn together by FCCLA members. The DIY totes were offered in spooky autumn shapes such as pumpkins, Frankenstein faces, and ghosts. For children in the community, it was a rewarding, hands-on way to learn about recycling and going green.

FCCLA members are certainly no strangers to community service. At Queen Creek High School, FCCLA is one of many Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) on campus. For many students CTSOs are an integral part of their education, as they provide valuable leadership experience in a particular area of Career and Technical Education. FCCLA, for example, is associated with the Culinary, Fashion Design and Merchandising, and Early Childhood Education classes. When members of the club aren’t fundraising, competing on the state and national levels, or conducting impact projects related to the family and the consumer, they are working to strengthen their neighborhood and community. In this case, that goal involved interacting with the Queen Creek community to spread a message of sustainability. As well as, giving others a head start on getting into that Halloween Spirit!
