College and career readiness for high school students is more important now than ever before. With so much competition, students need to start preparing for the real-world sooner by finding ways to stand-out; that’s exactly what DECA does for Queen Creek High School students. DECA’s mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
Recently, twenty-seven Queen Creek High DECA members attended the State DECA Career Development Conference in Tucson. At the conference, the students achieved great success! Four students earned Superior Knowledge medals. Four students earned Elite Member awards. Six students earned first place in Business Services Marketing, Hotel and Lodging Management, Quick Service Management, Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Restaurant and Foodservice Management and Retail Merchandising.
DECA serves as an integral part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Marketing program at Queen Creek High. “DECA provides our students opportunities to compete at a regional, state and international level. The competitions provide real world relevancy to our classroom content standards in addition to assisting our students with the skills to be successful in the marketing industry after high school. Any time you can make connections between the classroom and the professional world, we create a win-win situation,” said QCHS CTE Director Dr. Tiffannie Sechrist
In addition to individual awards, the QCHS DECA chapter as a whole won several awards at the State conference; and five DECA students earned the opportunity to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference April 26-29 in Anaheim, California. At the international conference, 18,000 high school students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni will gather to develop knowledge and skills for college and careers.
