Queen Creek High School Agriculture Students Inspire Young Farmers

On Friday, February 23, more than 100 second graders from Gateway Polytechnic Academy (GPA) took a field trip to the Queen Creek High School (QCHS) Agriculture Education & FFA Program. This unique field trip experience provided the 2nd graders a hands-on learning opportunity as they got to interact with farm animals and learn more about the agriculture industry. Day on the Farm was hosted by 35 QCHS students as an assignment for their Agriculture (Ag) Education class taught by Mr. Justen Ollendick.

Day on the Farm at QCHS consisted of 12 different agriculturally-related stations; each station was led by a group of Ag students. At some stations there were pigs, sheep, goats, a horse, cattle, rabbits and chickens. At the other stations, the 2nd graders played Ag based games and got to spin the Ag trivia wheel; they even got to make their own pipe-cleaner brand, and “branded” a paper steer which was provided by the Arizona Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom program.

Mr. Ollendick and his students have been preparing and planning for Day on the Farm since they returned from Winter Break in January. To earn class credit for the assignment, the high school students created an educational poster for their station, presented the poster to the 2nd graders, and guided the visiting students through different activities related to the agriculture industry. The high school students were also graded on basic oral presentation skills and agriculture industry knowledge.

All QCHS students enrolled in an Agriculture Education course are members of the Local, State, and National FFA Organizations; giving them the opportunity to apply the skills and concepts gained within the curriculum to Career Development Events (CDE)  around the state and country.
