Pima Animal Care Center Offers New Years Advice

As we head into 2018, the Pima Animal Care Center is reminding pet parents to take precautions to keep their beloved furry friends safe and happy.

In recent years, the first week in January has become one of the busiest times for PACC, with the shelter taking in 172 stray pets- 152 dogs and 20 cats- during Jan. 1-7, 2017.

Many pets are found lost after New Years celebrations. To help minimize the number of lost and injured pets that wind up at PACC in 2018, they are offering the following suggestions:

  1. Keep your pets inside during the fireworks- many will become startled by the loud noises and may run off.
  2. Make sure your pet wears proper up-to-date identification (collar, name tag, microchip) in case he or she becomes lost.
  3. Provide your pet with calming and distracting items for fireworks celebrations. Classical music, a ThunderShirt or fun toys such as a KONG filled with peanut butter will entertain them and keep their mind off the loud noises and excitement of New Years Eve.

Any pet owners who lose their animals should call the PACC Pet Support Center at (520) 724-7222 and check PACC’s Lost and Found pets webpage, as well as the Lost Pets Pima County Twitter feed frequently as new animals arrive every day.

Residents who encounter healthy stray animals are asked to have them scanned for a microchip and file a found report with the PACC Pet Support Center. If they can hold the pet at their home until they can be reunited with the owners, that would be great. Dogs are more likely to be returned home if they remain in their neighborhood. For injured strays, the public is encouraged to contact Animal Protection Services at (520) 724-5900.
