Phoenix Experts Share Troubleshooting Checklist for Air Conditioning

There’s no good time for your AC to conk out during a Phoenix summer, but there are worse times—like now. With excessive heat warnings expected to continue for many days, the experts at Donley AC & Plumbing are sharing a checklist for homeowners to review before calling the pros. Sometimes the fix can be quick DIY.

Thermostat checks

• Make sure it’s turned on and set to cool. If it’s not lighting up, try replacing batteries.

Got power?

• Donley technicians have responded to AC repair requests only to find the neighborhood is experiencing a power outage.
• If the condenser unit (the outside portion of your AC) isn’t running, check to make sure it is plugged in. If it is, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

Cramped condenser?

• To work efficiently, the condenser needs adequate airflow. Keep 2 to 3 feet of space between the condenser and plants or structures.
• Also, make sure the area is free of leaves, weeds and debris.

Dirty filter?

• The AC’s air filter is inside the house, typically in a slot below or on the side of the air handler.
• Make sure nothing is blocking the filter. Inspect the filter and if it’s dirty, replace. Donley recommends replacing the filter monthly during the summer.

Got water?

• If your AC is working okay but water is collecting under the air handler inside the home, it’s likely the condensate drain line is clogged. In newer units, a sensor will shut off the unit.
• If you’re comfortable trying to clear the line, be sure to first turn off the unit at the thermostat and the breaker.
• The drain line will connect to the air handler. Remove the plug and attach a wet vacuum hose to the line to suction out the clog.
• If the drain line remains clogged, you may need to call a professional with access to a more powerful vacuum.

If you’ve completed the checklist and your AC is still not performing well, contact a certified technician who can diagnose the problem and offer solutions. And, remember, the best way to avoid costly emergency repairs is by having regular maintenance.
