The Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase will take place on the weekend of September 8, 9 and 10th. Serving as a unique collaboration between Northern Arizona University and Theatrikos Theatre Company, the showcase will feature staged readings of the winning plays from the 2017 10-minute playwriting contest.
NAU Honors Department Lecturer Will Cordiero, NAU journalism professor Mary Tolan and NAU English Department graduate student James Alegre are winners of this year’s contest. Other winners include Sasha Stewart-Miller and Jean Blasiar of California and Lea Parker and Jim Kitchens of Florida. Three-time winner, Dan Borengasser, of Arkansas, will be honored as well.
Judges for this year’s contest included award-winning writers and arts administrators such as former NAPS winner Larry Hendricks, Viola Award winner Becky Daggett,and Flagstaff Arts Council Executive Director John Tannous. They were responsible for selecting plays from a large pool of nearly sixty entries submitted by playwrights from the region and the nation.
The 2017 Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase will feature local directors and actors in Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a Sunday 2 p.m. show. Doors will open 30 minutes before the show begins at Doris Harper White Playhouse (11 W. Cherry). Tickets for the showcase are $10 and may be purchased at the door or at theatrikos.com.
