Moon Valley Mourning Loss of High School Football Player

A valley school and community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old football player.

Carlos Sanchez, starting linebacker for the Moon Valley Rockets, was rushed to the hospital on Friday in critical condition after collapsing on the football field. He was unresponsive, and first responders said he may have had a seizure.

On Sunday, the Phoenix Police Department and the Glendale Union High School District confirmed his death.

A small vigil was held at the school, with a makeshift memorial and candles. Nearly 50 people gathered and held hands, praying for Sanchez and his family.

“He was a constant force of hard work and selflessness on our team,” said Moon Valley Coach Seth Millican in a tearful statement. “My team is full of young men who will go out into the world and treat people in a better way because of Carlos’s influence.”

Sanchez’s fellow students were encouraged to wear blue on Monday in his honor. The Glendale Union High School District released the following statement: “Our school community is saddened by the news of Carlos’s passing. We extend our deepest condolences to Carlos’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

GoFundMe page has been set up to honor Carlos and support his family during this time.
