Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has vetoed 10 bills in the midst of protests from teachers about low pay.

Ducey rejected 10 pieces of legislation, effectively sending a message to the Legislature that he wants to see a budget that increases pay for educators across the state.

The vetoes followed the vocal disapproval from tens of thousands of teachers, who banded together to reject the governor’s plan for a 20 percent pay raise. Teachers throughout the state voted to go on strike net week, saying Ducey ignored their other demands. Teachers were also calling for pay raises for support staff, more overall school funding back to 2008 levels, and no tax cuts until funding reaches the national average.

Although so far Ducey has refused to meet with the leaders and organizers of the teacher protests, his veto letters say “Our teachers have earned this raise. It’s time to get it done.”
