Get The Most Out Of Your AC By Avoiding These Common Issues

(PHOENIX) – After four solid months of regular use this year, your AC may be getting tired. With several weeks of high temperatures still ahead, the experts at Donley AC & Plumbing want you to stay cool. One of the best ways to ensure your comfort is to avoid these common mistakes:

1. Constantly running Aor changing temperatures

Heat sources like ovens, clothes dryers and sunlight can increase the temperature inside and force your AC unit to run continuously. On extra hot days, avoid using the oven and dryer and keep blinds and drapes closed.

When it comes to your thermostat, a good rule of thumb is ‘set it and forget it’.  Raising the temperature while you’re away for several hours and then turning it down when you return will not conserve energy or save money. The unit must work harder to cool the house, leading to unnecessary wear and tear. Instead, find a comfortable temperature, set it and forget it.

2. Dirty air filters

A dirty filter restricts airflow and forces the AC to work harder and run hotter, which can potentially shorten the life of the unit. Our dry, dusty climate can quickly clog your filter leading to higher energy bills and more repairs. Clean or replace your filter every month.

3. Dirty outdoor unit

The outdoor unit moves air through the coils, an important job that becomes more difficult when dirt, grass and debris get in the way. Cleaning is as easy as spraying down your unit by positioning a hose on the top and directing water out so the gunk is carried away.

During monsoon season, an AC can produce 5-10 gallons a day.If the drain line becomes blocked or clogged, water in the pan can overflow and potentially damage your home. If water is leaking from the unit, a professional can properly clean the condensation line. If you want to try it yourself, turn off the AC and locate the drain line exiting your home, then use a wet dry vacuum to remove water and debris.

4. Lack of maintenance

Regular maintenance will keep your AC unit running efficiently and maximize its life. Although the U.S. Department of Energy says the average lifespan of a central air conditioner is 15 to 20 years, we generally experience a shorter lifespan in Arizona– closer to 12-15 years.  Even if your AC is 10 yeas old, the DOE says you may save 20-40% on energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.
