Fun ways QCUSD is planting the seed of knowledge for students

Bugs, bugs and more bugs! On September 23, QCUSD’s Gateway Polytechnic Academy hosted a Bug Walk. Every grade was assigned a bug to study. Students then put together displays to show off what makes each bug unique. Pre-K studied hissing cockroaches, first grade studied lady bugs, second grade studied ants, third grade checked out butterflies and fourth grade studied bees! The bug projects were then put on display in the gymnasium. Parents, grandparents and guardians packed the gym to see students in action explaining their bugs.

The Bug Walk tied into National Teach Ag Day which was September 22. On National Teach Ag Day, Queen Creek students across the district learned about the importance of agriculture. At GPA, in addition to learning about bugs, sixth and seventh graders were asked to grow plants out of something other than soil.

Over at Queen Creek High School, teachers and staff took National Teach Ag Day a step further. The school brought in instructors from the Town and Chamber of Commerce to talk about how agriculture has shaped Queen Creek. Even QCHS Principal Paul Gagnon rolled up his sleeves to explain the growing need for future farmers.

The Bug Walk and National Teach Ag day align with the Queen Creek District’s focus on STEAM education and curriculum. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Projects like the Bug Walk and recognizing the importance of agriculture are just a few ways QCUSD is encouraging students to think outside the box!

The Queen Creek Unified School District is one of only nine districts in the state to have been graded “A” by the Arizona Department of Education for four consecutive years (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14).
