Fire Southeast of Flagstaff Creates Protective Buffers

Fire officials in the Flagstaff area investigated a fire caused by lightning on Thursday near Upper Lake Mary.

Coconino National Forest officials responded to the Newman Fire, which had burned around two acres three miles south of Upper Lake Mary. The flames posed no threat to buildings or homes in the area, although the fire did produce smoke in the area. Fire officials said allowing the fire to burn could create important buffers to protect homes and infrastructure from severe wildfires in the future.
