During the last week of August, the Flagstaff Fire Department’s Wildland Crew battled two Wildfires in the area.

Officials with the Flagstaff Fire Department say both blazes began from lightning strikes on Saturday, August 25th. However, the fires were not discovered until the weather cleared and warmer; drier conditions arrived. Both fires were within the boundaries of the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project (FWPP) area.

Officials say the first fire spanned half an acre in the Dry Lake Hills area. Flames spread across this very rough and steep terrain, right next to an area that is being thinned for forest treatment in 2019. The second blaze was on a quarter of an acre of land in the Open Space Observatory Mesa parcel. This took place in an area where selective tree thinning took place last year.

Both fires were brought under control without major incident.
