DPS Arrest Wrong-Way Driver in North Phoenix

Local police officers and the Arizona Department of Public Safety have been working diligently to stop wrong-way drivers and prevent deadly crashes.

A report from DPS states that around 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, 25th April, they received a call from a trucker regarding a wrong-way driver on I-17 near the Carefree Highway and Anthem.

32-year-old Heather Helcher was caught on camera with her vehicle facing the wrong way on the side of the road. When she was detained, she reportedly admitted to drinking two alcoholic beverages at a nearby bar. She refused to complete the one-leg stand of her field sobriety test, allegedly telling troopers, “I can’t do that when I’m sober.”

A resident of Anthem, Helcher had a blood-alcohol level of .233, nearly three times the legal limit, and has been charged with aggravated DUI.
