Construction of new pickleball courts is underway at Tempe Sports Complex

Pickleball is coming to Tempe! Construction is underway on the city’s first dedicated, permanent pickleball courts at the Tempe Sports Complex, located north of Warner Road on Hardy Drive. Once the project is complete this April, eight brand-new, LED-lit courts will be open to the public.

In line with the city’s overall effort to provide adaptive recreation opportunities, two of the courts follow the recommended dimensions to accommodate players with disabilities, particularly those in wheelchairs. According to USAPA Pickleball and the American Sports Builders Association, pickleball is a good sport for athletes in wheelchairs, allowing them to compete with anyone, regardless of abilities.

Construction on the new courts began in late December 2018. Most of January will consist of site grading and concrete work. Fencing, electrical and lighting work will take place in February and March.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis and badminton and has become a national phenomenon, attracting players of all ages and activity levels. To embrace this emerging recreational group, Tempe City Council approved dedicated funding to build the new courts.
