Community leaders gather to launch clean water initiative in south Phoenix

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement recently awarded a $25,000 grant to Water Works to bring safe, clean drinking water to the farmers and gardeners cultivating crops in south Phoenix.

The Water Works community coalition is a Girl Scout Gold Award project initiated and led by 18-year-old Girl Scout Ambassador Haley Holmes. Water Works was designed to help underserved communities gain greater access to clean water, healthy food, and an active lifestyle.

With the funding, Water Works will collaborate with like-minded community partners to provide safe, sustainable drinking water at the Spaces of Opportunity community gardens in south Phoenix, which do not have easy access to a source of drinking water for the farmers who are working the land.

To accomplish this, SOURCE® Hydropanels, a first-of-its-kind, sustainable technology, will make high-quality drinking water from sunlight and air. The project will provide up to 10 gallons of clean drinking water every day to the farmers and gardeners at the community gardens for the next 15 years.

To kick off the project, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Nov. 12 at the Spaces of opportunity community gardens in south Phoenix, 1200 W. Vineyard Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85041.
