Classic Musical, Meet Me in St. Louis, opens at Hale Theatre

Hale Centre Theatre in Gilbert presents Meet Me in St. Louis, a charming Broadway musical based on the film that rocketed Judy Garland to fame as an adult movie star and singer. The story transports us back in time to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where we meet Mr. and Mrs. Smith, their four daughters and one son. Romantic suitors, comedic misunderstandings, jovial pranks, and popular songs will delight audiences with nonstop entertainment.

The famous songs Meet Me in St. Louie, Louie, The Boy Next Door, Skip to My Lou, The Trolley Song, A Day in New York, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas will warm hearts and tempt you to sing along! The movie was nominated for four Oscars and was named one of the Ten Best Musicals by the American Film Institute. The Broadway production in 1989-1990 was nominated for four Tony Awards and won New York’s Theatre World Award.

Featured players in Hale’s production of Meet Me in St. Louis include Holly Payne in the role of Esther Smith, making her Hale Debut. The role of Esther is the one that Judy Garland played in the 1944 MGM film to much critical acclaim. For her part, Ms. Payne has won best actress at the ASU Gammage Awards for playing Peter Pan in Peter Pan. She has also performed in New York at the Minskoff Theatre and starred in Hello Dolly! as Minnie Fay. Jacob Goodman will play the boy next door, John Truitt. This is Goodman’s 3rd show at Hale.  Heidi-Liz Johnson plays sister Rose Smith. Ms. Johnson has been twice nominated for ariZoni Awards for her performances in Me and My Girl and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Also making her Hale debut is Katie Brown playing Agnes Smith, Esther’s sister. Ms. Brown has won a National Youth Theatre award for her performance as Jane Banks in Mary Poppins. The young Lily Nelson has the role of Tootie Smith, the fourth sister. The role of their brother Lon Smith is played by Allan DeWitt, a veteran of several Hale Theatre productions.

AriZoni Award-winning stage actor Rob Stuart performs the fatherly role of Mr. Alonso Smith, appearing on Hale’s stage for the 15th time. He won the ariZoni Award as Best Actor in Hale’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Rochelle Barton appears as the mother of the Smith family, Mrs. Anna Smith.

AriZoni Award winner Stephen Serna, and AriZoni Award and National Youth Theatre Award winner Emily Woodward-Shaw are featured in the ensemble; as are ariZoni nominees Micah Jondel DeShazer, and Cameron Swindler.
