Cancer Support Community Arizona (CSCAZ), the leader in providing emotional support programs for nearly 20 years to anyone impacted by cancer, is excited to launch the Cancer Quilt Project, a powerful LIVE art exhibition for cancer survivors and their loved ones to create panels to share their journey through cancer. This free quilt creation is being presented as part of Cancer Support Community Arizona’s Market on Palm – an Artisan Marketplace on Friday, Nov. 3 from 5-9 p.m., located at 360 East Palm Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
“The goal of the Cancer Quilt Project is to create a tribute for those who have been impacted by Cancer, and to thereby help people understand the devastating impact of the disease on not only the individual diagnosed, but also their caregivers,” says Debbie DiCarlo, CEO, Cancer Support Community Arizona. “The Quilt will serve as powerful visual reminder of lives lost, loneliness, despair and often the hope and triumph that comes from the journey through cancer. More than 32,000 individuals are diagnosed with cancer each year in Arizona, which leaves a trail of even more caregivers.”
Market on Palm – an Artisan Marketplace is a free community based event, regardless of your connection to cancer. Anyone who has been impacted by cancer is encouraged to attend and participate by adding their story to the Cancer Quilt Project. Registration is not required and you can learn more about the event by visiting its Facebook page https://tinyurl.com/ycmatjtm.
The Inaugural Display
In the Spring of 2018, the Quilt will make its inaugural display at the Phoenix Center for the Arts and the Sheraton Grand Phoenix in the heart of downtown before traveling to the Herberger Theater Center in 2019. It is anticipated to include nearly 100 panels and be visited by thousands in the next two years.
History of The Quilt
In Spring 2017, a member of the Cancer Support Community Arizona team and local artist saw an opportunity to create a transformative storyboard for people impacted by cancer to document their journey. In addition to the panels, The Quilt will hopefully grow to include an archive of additional objects including handwritten notes, letters, cards, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, poems, etc.
