Bashas’ Celebrates Pop Culture’s Influence on Food in this Year’s Donut Contest

From popular television shows and hit movies to music and video games, pop culture impacts every aspect of our lives, including the food that we eat. That is why Bashas’ is using pop culture as the inspiration for its ninth annual Donut Flavor Craze contest.

This year, the grocery chain is inviting kids and grown-ups to dream up new donut flavors inspired by pop culture, whether that be a Taylor Swift album, a popular video game, a favorite television series, a beloved book, a frequently watched cartoon, or even a major motion picture.

Now through May 17, Arizonans are invited to submit their pop culture donut flavor idea at: Bashas’ encourages entrants to be creative with their flavor submissions, from sweet to savory and everything in between. Entries for each category (kids ages 8-17 and grown-ups ages 18+) will consist of a 100-word summary of their donut flavor, including the proposed name, key ingredients, and donut description, including how pop culture plays into the concept.

Two lucky winners (one kid and one grown-up) will see their donut flavor ideas come to life in Bashas’ bakery cases this June. Each of them will also earn Bashas’ 2024 Donut Ambassador title, along with $500 in prizes including a Bashas’ gift card, baking/cooking gadgets, and one dozen donuts every month for a year. Two runners-up (one kid and one grown-up) will each receive a $50 Bashas’ gift card. Six entrants (three kids and three grown-ups) will each receive honorable mentions along with a $20 Bashas’ gift card.

Bashas’ is accepting submissions from now until 11:59 p.m. MST on May 17, 2024. A panel of Bashas’ judges will select 10 finalists (five kids and five grown-ups) by May 23. A team of celebrity judges will then help to determine the two winners, two runners-up, and six honorable mentions by June 3, just in time for National Donut Day on June 7. Bashas’ will feature the winning donuts in its bakery cases across the state for a limited time this summer, joining the grocer’s other made-from-scratch treats, including donuts, fritters, croissants, Danishes, brownies, frosted cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and more.

“From television characters and movie scenes to books, songs and sports, pop culture has a tremendous impact on food trends,” said Ashley Shick, Director of Communications & Public Affairs for Bashas’ Family of Stores. “This year’s contest allows Arizonans to display their pop culture knowledge and culinary creativity in delicious ways.”
