In the midst of his battle with brain cancer, Arizona Senator John McCain has plans to return to his alma mater to deliver a speech.
McCain will address the Brigade of Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland. The 81-year-old veteran and former prisoner of war will discuss leadership and service to the nation.
The academy made the announcement on Tuesday, October 24, and said the senator, who served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, will speak Monday evening.
Despite his grim prognosis, McCain continues to be committed to his political and civic duties. The six-term Republican continued his clash with President Donald Trump when he criticzed the Vietnam-era draft system for forcing low-income Americans to serve while the wealthy were excused with a doctor’s note.
