Arizona National Guard Service Members Head to Guantanamo Bay

It was a tough day for dozens of proud family members as they bid farewell to their beloved service members.

More than 50 Arizona National Guard men and women are on their way to the naval base at Guantanamo Bay. They will spend nine months there as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as they oversee operations and serve as a military police unit.

The National Guard members said goodbye to their loved ones on Friday morning in Phoenix, at Papago Park Military Reservation off of 50th Street and McDowell Road.

The unit is the 850th Military Police Command Unit, assigned with assisting the operations of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. Their overseas mission is very secure and sensitive.

The unit includes both police officers from various Valley agencies and civilian soldiers from the plumbing, electricity and technology industries.
