We came, we saw, we ran! Although the high school cross country season is over, the Arizona community is ready to run once again. On Jan. 4, 2020, at 8 am, the Arizona Girl Up Chapter will hold a 5K run to raise money to empower girls from all around the world so people can hear their stories.
Important to note is the dedication and excitement three Tempe Prep Juniors are putting into organizing the event. Clara Moffitt, Brooke Kirk and Maya Kostov, all part of Tempe Prep’s Herstory Club and members of the board of directors for the Girl Up Arizona Coalition, have been inspired to create this event and make it a fun experience for runners and walkers of all ages.
The Arizona Girl Up’s 5K Fundraiser will be help along the Tempe Canal to promote the health, safety, and education of girls around the world through the United Nations Girl Up Foundation.
Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate for a $10 entrance fee (cash or checks payable to Girl Up). Registration begins at 7:30 am outside Picazzo’s restaurant at 440 W. Warner Road in Tempe, Arizona 85284.
The Arizona Girl Up Chapter will also be collecting used athletic shoes at the event to support their efforts.
Arizona Girl Up is led by high school students throughout Arizona with many members of the Arizona Executive Board attending high schools in the East Valley.
Obviously, just like all things, organizing such a big scale event has its ups and its downs, yet in just a few months, the run was created and is now going to happen. The beginning of the planning was difficult. Arizona Girl Up Coalition’s co-lead, Clara Moffitt explains, “The Arizona Girl Up Board has been working really hard to find a venue, find donors and it has been stressful,” but she can see that by working together they have successfully put on a great event for a great purpose. Communication she has learned is the key to great leadership and a great turnout.
The board members have learned that talking to each other every day maximizes the productivity. They also learned that they need to have a strong bond that will help them get through times when they cannot find an answer right away.
Furthermore, Tempe Prep can also participate as students are encouraged to come and support the progress of that great organization. One can even bring their old pairs of shoes and donate them. All of the funds will be sent to the Girl Up organization and will be distributed in countries that need the sources to help all girls have the opportunity to go to school. So, grab your shoes and come run or walk with your friends

Come out and support these young women improving the lives of girls internationally!
