Annual Summer of a Million Meals Fundraiser Returns

Annual Summer of a Million Meals Fundraiser Returns

This summer, thousands of Arizona kids and their families will worry about where their next meal is coming from, as hunger does not take a summer vacation. In response, United Food Bank is proud to announce the return of the seventh annual Summer of a Million Meals fundraiser campaign, in partnership with 12News and Fry’s Food Stores, to assist families in need by raising one million meals. The campaign kicks off on May 17 and will run through Labor Day.

With children out of school for summer break, many families face additional hardships as electricity bills rise and families have additional expenses for childcare and meals.

“We are thrilled to continue our efforts once again with 12News and Fry’s Food Stores for our annual Summer of a Million Meals fundraiser,” said Jason Reed, president and CEO of United Food Bank. “This is one of our most important fundraisers as it ensures every family has access to the meals they need. Food insecurity is a year-round problem in Arizona, but the need increases over the summer months with children on break from school.”

Throughout the summer, United Food Bank, in partnership with 12News will host three giving telethon events on May 17, June 6 and July 18. Each day during the telethon, 12 News viewers can call United Food Bank to make a donation at 480-398-4499 during the times of 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In addition, Arizonans also have the option to donate online at or at any of the registers at Fry’s Food Stores from Friday, May 17 through Labor Day.

“12News is committed to making a positive impact on our community,” said president and general manager of 12News, Kate Morris. “For seven years, we’ve been a proud partner of United Food Bank and the Summer of a Million Meals campaign. Our hope is that, together with our partners and our generous viewers, we can come together as neighbors to create a summer of abundance for all.”

“Fry’s Food Stores has been a leader in the fight to end hunger in Arizona for many years, which is part of our Zero Hunger Zero Waste social impact plan.” said Monica Garnes, president of Fry’s Food Stores. “The reason we’re able to stay focused on this important initiative is our great partnership with United Food Bank and other local feeding organizations. We are proud to partner with United Food Bank and 12News for the Summer of a Million Meals campaign and we’re grateful that our wonderful customers and associates continue to support this worthy cause, year after year.”

New this year, United Food Bank will help kick-off the Summer of a Million Meals campaign with its first ever Food Drive Friday on May 17. Arizonans are invited to donate unopened and non-perishable foods, such as canned goods, cereals, oatmeal, peanut butter, rice, pasta, soups, etc. These food donations can be dropped off at United Food Bank’s volunteer center, located at 358 E. Javelina Ave., Mesa, AZ 85210, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17.

The Summer of a Million Meals was financially assisted by The Kroger Co. and Fry’s Food Stores through The Kroger Co. Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation. The Kroger Co. Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation is a nonprofit corporation and tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, dedicated to finding solutions to combat the issues of food insecurity and food waste in the communities where Kroger stores operate, including Fry’s Food Stores in Arizona.
