Upon re-opening its doors in late spring, The Cosanti Foundation and Arcosanti have been working hard to bring back its robust events and workshop schedule — while ensuring safety of its employees, residents and guests. The Cosanti and Arcosanti teams are pleased to announce their fall activities, beginning this October including:

One-Day Photography Workshop

Sunday, October 18 and Saturday, November 7 at Arcosanti

10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (including an hour break for lunch)

$200 per workshop

The architecture of Arcosanti is the perfect backdrop for a one-day photographic experience facilitated by Jessica Jameson. Participants will learn the use of creative techniques that incorporate depth of field, shutter speed, and exposure compensation alongside both artistic and impactful approaches to composition. General architectural information will be provided throughout the tour and architectural elements will be highlighted. Besides receiving an intimate look at Arcosanti, participants will also learn:

●        How to “see” light and the interplay of light and shadows

●        How to make creative compositions

●        How to experiment with depth of field

●        How to intentionally stop – or blur – action, and movement

●        How to control ISO or exposure compensation

This workshop is led by Jessica Sypher, an Arcosanti resident, and a professional photographer. Jessica’s educational background includes a BA Honors in Environmental Studies and a graduate diploma in Environmental Visual Communication from the Royal Ontario Museum. She specializes in environmental portraits and creative on-location photography that takes advantage of the interplay between built and natural environments. The workshop will require climbing stairs and walking for longer periods of time; maximum eight participants per class.

Lodging is available in a shared dorm for $25 per night or private guestroom for $50 per night.

One-Day Silt Casting  Workshop

Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, November 15 at Arcosanti; Sunday, November 15 and Saturday, December 5 at Cosanti

9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (including an hour break for lunch)

$160 per workshop

In this hands-on workshop led by Rob David participants will learn and experience the unique earth cast process developed at Cosanti and utilized at both Cosanti and Arcosanti. This process involves using the ground as the formwork to create the Cosanti bells and pottery. Participants will have the opportunity to cast and create their own one-of-a-kind ceramic bell.

This class will teach the silt cast ceramics process, including preparation of the silt beds, creation of the molds, and pouring the clay slip. Guests will also learn about drying the clay, processing and coloring the bells, carving principles and knife skills. The actual firing and assembly will be completed at a later date and participants’ work will be shipped to them.
Maximum eight participants per class.
