This week, the Phoenix chapter of Frontline Foods delivered its first 1,200 restaurant meals to local medical facilities. The group plans to deliver more than 2,000 meals next week, with more planned going forward.

It’s part of a grassroots organization partnered with World Central Kitchen, a non-profit founded by Chef Jose Andres, to bring food to healthcare workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic while at the same time supporting restaurants impacted by the crisis. All funds raised go directly to restaurants in local communities across the country enabling them to keep their kitchens open to prepare meals for hospitals and other medical facilities.

“We have raised over $19,000 so far, and we hope to grow to more locations and feed more frontline workers in the coming weeks in the Phoenix area,” said Derrick Anthony, founder of Frontline Foods Phoenix. Frontline Foods currently provides meals to the hardworking staff of 15 Medical Center Critical Care Hospitals including Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Dignity Health, Banner Health, Honor Health, and Valleywise Health. It also partners with a variety of local restaurants to prepare the meals.

“Being a part of this meal program allows us to bring back staff that we had to lay off due to lack of business,” says David Johnson of Ocotillo Restaurant and Bar. “It’s also an opportunity to show our appreciation to healthcare workers that are putting themselves at the forefront of this pandemic and keeping our community healthy. Thank you for keeping us healthy!”

“We are amazed by the overwhelming support of our community,” said Patricia Barney, who is coordinating delivery with several healthcare facilities. “Our team members feel the love and support from across Arizona, and it is wonderful to see that their important work is recognized. We thank you, dearly, for your generosity and continued support.”

“The heartbreaking impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is being felt across Phoenix’s vibrant restaurant scene,” said Anthony. “But if we come together as a community, we can fight back against COVID-19 by supporting our local restaurant industry while also showing our gratitude to the healthcare heroes on the frontline of this crisis. That’s why two weeks ago, after countless conversations with various friends and family about the impact on our favorite restaurants, we started the Phoenix chapter of Frontline Foods.”
