Former Phoenix Mercury Player and Coach Starts Project Roots in South Phoenix

The startup non-profit will hold a tree planting event on Saturday, February 15th with a goal to plant 200 citrus trees in South Phoenix. 

PHOENIX, Ariz., (Feb 9, 2020) — Join Project Roots and the South Phoenix community on Saturday, February 15th at 11 a.m. at Spaces of Opportunity located at 1200 W Vineyard Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85041 to plant citrus trees. 

Project Roots is a non-profit organization created by Phoenix Mercury, WNBA Champion Bridget Pettis and current coach for the Chicago Sky. Pettis founded the non-profit organization here in Arizona to educate our communities to grow their own food and empower themselves. The startup seeks to provide and promote a healthier, more sustainable way of living in urban areas. Pettis has long term goals to bring her knowledge of gardening back to the midwest and share what she is doing there too. 

The public is invited to attend this special event on Saturday, February 15. RSVP and/or purchase trees at a discounted rate through https://store.urbanfarm.org/treedonation and $20 of your purchase will go directly as a donation to Project Roots. This is a wonderful way to help our community gardens start off on the right “root!”

Project Roots is a local non-profit organization with a purpose to to educate and feed our homeless through a local community garden and mobile kitchen service  Their first event, The Great Seeding on December 21, 2019 took place at Spaces of Opportunity located in South Phoenix. Friends, families and volunteers in the community helped launch the beginning of their first crop plan in the new quarter-acre space.
