One in five households served by a local food bank has at least one member who has served in the U.S. military. To make an impact, United Food Bank; Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Arizona; Humana, a leading health and well-being company; and Iora Primary Care have partnered on a food and fund drive benefiting military veterans from Jan. 18 through Feb. 28, 2020.

As part of the “Uniting to Combat Hunger” campaign, non-perishable food will be collected at locations throughout the Valley of the Sun, including:

Community members are encouraged to call locations to verify hours of operation before dropping off items.

In addition to food donations, members of the community can provide monetary donations. Every $10 donation helps United Food Bank provide 50 meals. Donations can be made at: feedaz.org.

The food and fund drive will kick off with a Ruck March at the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon during the 5K on Saturday, Jan. 18, in downtown Tempe (start/finish lines: Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway). In the military, soldiers carry a heavily-loaded rucksack, similar to a backpack, over a long distance. To bring awareness to food insecurity among our military and veteran community, participants will carry packs filled with non-perishable food donations and march the 5K route, delivering the food to United Food Bank at the finish line.

Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In the United States, food insecurity affects one in nine people. Food insecurity is a social determinant of health, which are conditions in people’s environment that can affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

In 2018, Humana partnered with Feeding America – the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States – to stage a series of events that drove food donations and raised awareness of food insecurity with a focus on helping veterans. United Food Bank is part of Feeding America’s network of food banks.

This is the second year Humana has hosted a food and fund drive in Arizona in partnership with Feeding America. Last year’s food drive raised close to 2,800 pounds of food, or more than 2,300 meals.
