A 25-year-old man has been taken into police custody after he was disruptive on a flight and tried to run onto the tarmac at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Friday morning.
The incident occurred just after 6 a.m. when an American Airlines flight from Minneapolis landed safely at Terminal 4.
According to Phoenix Police, the man had been acting strange and suspiciously during the flight, randomly touching the heads and faces of other fliers and spraying an unknown substance from a spray bottle on fellow passengers. The individual was brought to the front of the plane to disembark before others, but while waiting for the door to the jet way to open, the man opened the service door on the opposite side of the airplane and jumped out.
Police say the man suffered minor injuries when he landed on the ground approximately 10 feet below. Airport employees were able to stop the man from going any further, and he was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officials also said the passengers aboard the flight did not want to press any charges, but the suspect will be facing trespassing charges once he is released from hospital.
Operations at Sky Harbor were not disrupted during this time, and the man’s name has yet to be released.
Several passengers spoke to local media outlets and expressed their concerns over the man, and their fears that he may be involved in a terrorist attack when he started yelling and throwing things at people. One passenger even claimed he peed on their backpack. Flight attendants tried to calm the man down.
American Airlines released the following statement:
“American had requested law enforcement meet flight 1346 upon arrival in Phoenix due to a disruptive passenger. Once the flight arrived at the gate, the passenger opened one of doors and jumped off the aircraft. Law enforcement and paramedics responded.”
