Newell Barney and Queen Creek Middle Schools, the two middle schools of the Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD), scored Superior with Distinction ratings at this year’s Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA) festival. ABODA is a non-profit organization serving the needs of Arizona’s school music students and its members. Over thirty thousand students participate in ABODA events annually through festivals, competitions, concerts, honor bands and honor orchestras in all areas of music education.
Newell Barney Band Teacher, Newt Wilson, said, “This is a huge accomplishment for our Band Programs here in Queen Creek. This is the first time in the history of the Queen Creek Unified School District that a band or orchestra has received a Superior with Distinction. And not only one but two of our bands earned this award in the same school year!” Mr. Wilson added that the members of the band spent their free time, including before and after school, during lunch and spring break, and Presidents Day to ensure they were at the top of their game for the ABODA festival.
Queen Creek Middle School Band had a similar work ethic when it came to the festival. Robert Pollock, the Queen Creek Middle School Band Teacher, said, “On the first day of school my students set a goal of working towards the top rating (Superior with Distinction), and then backed it up by showing me great work ethic and the rigor required to achieve this goal.” Like the Newell Barney Middle School Band, the Queen Creek Middle School Band also took the extra initiative to spend their free time practicing and improving their playing, which led to earning their rating. Pollock added, “It’s great to see when hard work pays off. They’ve made a new goal for the upcoming State Festival on May 8th—they’re very determined.”
Though there is no placement or ranking available, of the 80+ Arizona bands participating in the ABODA festival, only 15 bands were awarded the rating of Superior with Distinction including our NBMS and QCMS bands. Congratulations to Mr. Wilson, Mr. Pollock, and the Newell Barney and Queen Creek Middle School Bands for their extraordinary accomplishment!
