Events for Seniors, From the City of Scottsdale

My Local News Arizona - Advertisement

Are you either a senior citizen or a family member of one who resides in Scottsdale?  Are you aware that the City of Scottsdale offers a plethora of services that you can take advantage of. This includes classes and activities that are available each season and have incredible flexibility. Whether you are a permanent resident or a Winter visitor, you can partake of the excitement.  The classes generally take place in the various senior centers around the City. Exactly what kinds of things can you learn?

One genre of classes is given in the various senior fitness centers.  There are strength training lessons, exercise instructions, dancing lessons and all sorts of physical activity classes.  Other suggestions are table tennis, bowling, and senior softball games. All of the physical activity classes are given in state-of-the-art facilities and taught by experts who are seniors.

In case you are not quite up to physical activity, take heart, there are things for you to do too. There are several bridge groups you can belong to. Perhaps the Arts & Crafts Fair or the Talent Show will pique your interest?  First we shall talk about the Fair. It takes place in early November each year. You will find everything from jewelry, to artwork, to hand-made clothing.  Of course, that is the tip of the proverbial iceberg; there is so much more offered here. If you want to become involved in the Fair, either as a vendor or as part of the staff, you can stay busy virtually all year round.

The Talent Show will be coming up THIS Spring.  It is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, in the afternoon at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, which is located in the heart of the city.  Classes are given at the Senior Centers throughout the year in a range of performing arts categories. The culmination of all the hard work is the Talent Show every Spring.  Whether you want to participate or just be a spectator, contact the City of Scottsdale senior center staff for more information.

Speaking of more information, full details and a listing of all classes and services can also be obtained from City staffers.  The best phone numbers to call are the ones at either Senior Center. Specifically, you can call Granite Reef Senior Center at 480-312-1700, or Via Linda Senior Center in north Scottsdale at 480-312-5810.  If you call now, you should be in time to register for the Spring class session. Do not miss this opportunity!
