Support My Club, the student-focused online platform that allows school clubs and teams to request their needs and have them fulfilled by the community, today announces it is starting the new year with a new CEO. On the heels of a high-achieving year, founder and former CEO, Amy Armstrong, will be remaining heavily involved with the organization, while passing the baton of CEO to Karen Thomas to further Support My Club’s growth. Thomas’ experience spans more than 20 years, including deep expertise in developing the potential of organizations through fundraising, as well as increasing efficiency through organizational and board management. Her experience uniquely qualifies her to lead Support My Club through this next phase. Thomas’ role officially began on January 14.
“I am proud to be joining and leading Support My Club, an organization I’ve seen powerfully promote the intellectual, emotional and creative development of Arizona high school students,” says Karen Thomas, CEO of Support My Club. “In particular, I’m looking forward to furthering our funding initiatives, maximizing our resources and making sure we’re giving as much as possible to make extracurricular activities a reality for all the students who wish to participate. This is a stellar team with an extraordinary mission, and I can’t wait to dive in.”
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Thomas is a seasoned resource development and marketing professional with vast experience developing long-term sustainable resources for a variety of organizations. She has previously managed resources for such recognizable organizations as Mercy Housing, Make-A-Wish America, Make-A-Wish Arizona, Saint Mary’s Scholarship and Benefit Fund, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Childhelp and The AZ Lost Boys Center. Most recently, Thomas was the senior director of annual fund at Yellowstone Forever, the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. She has also served on numerous nonprofit boards throughout the years, and volunteered for many organizations as well.
Hiring Thomas as CEO is a testament to the momentum that Support My Club has gained in the past year. By enabling an easy way for donors to supply school clubs’ and teams’ needs, Support My Club has delivered over 12,000 needed items to help students participate and advance in academics, activities, arts, athletics – primarily to title one (low income) schools who need it the most. In return, the students have performed over 60,000 hours of community service as a way of expressing their gratitude.
“I have been so thrilled to serve as Support My Club’s CEO since founding the organization in 2012, and couldn’t be more proud of the work we have done,” says Amy Armstrong, Support My Club’s founder. “We have transitioned from a startup to a growth organization, and with that comes a natural opportunity to bring in a new CEO. I’m eager to see how Karen’s tremendous leadership skills and extensive experience take Support My Club to new heights in terms of our growth and reach. I look forward to remaining deeply involved and a part of the leadership team as the incoming board chair.”
