Tempe is hosting a public meeting to collect feedback on the proposed expansion of the city’s adapted recreation programs. The meeting will take place on Monday, Feb. 4 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road. Discussion topics will include:

  • An expansion of Kid Zone, LEAP adapted afterschool and Camp Challenge adapted summer recreation programs
  • An enhanced registration process for all residents interested in inclusive recreation programming
  • Enhanced training for recreation and Kid Zone staff
  • Hiring additional staff to meet student to staff ratios

City staff will be available to answer questions after the presentation. Those who are unable to attend can comment online from Feb. 4-18 at tempe.gov/forum. Comments provided at the meeting and online will be incorporated into a final recommendation to bring to the full City Council for consideration at a later date.

This public meeting is the result of the Adaptive Parks and Recreation Working Group. Councilmember Robin Arredondo-Savage brought the idea to Tempe City Council and was joined in the working group by Vice Mayor Lauren Kuby, Councilmember Randy Keating and city staff. In summer 2017, the working group began to evaluate the city’s adapted recreation programs and consider expansion to improve the quality of services. A survey was distributed to parents in the Tempe Elementary School system, showing overwhelming support for increased after school program options.

Tempe has a robust adapted recreation program that consists of after school programs, summer camps, year-round social and fitness activities and Special Olympics. For more information, visit tempe.gov/AdaptedRecreation.
