The Children’s Museum of Phoenix announces the appointment of Deborah G. Carstens as Honorary Grandparent Chair of their 2019 Gala …And the Beat Goes On. The appointment underscores the Museum’s recognition of the vital role that grandparents play in children’s lives. The Museum currently has over 5,000 member families, 11.5% of which are grandparent memberships.

“Research shows that as many as 9 out of 10 adult grandchildren feel their grandparents influenced their values and behaviors. Grandparents transmit to their grandchildren the values and norms of social order.” (Dr. Karl Pillemer of Cornell University)

Deborah, head of Carstens Family Funds, a philanthropic organization active in three western states (Arizona, California and Colorado), has been a generous friend of the Children’s Museum of Phoenix for many years. Carstens Family Funds supports the Museum’s annual Sand-Parents Day in April during their SandFest weekend event, along with National Grandparents Day in September. Both events allow grandparents to visit the Museum for free with their grandchildren so they can enjoy a day of play together with activities and projects designed to showcase and nurture these special family relationships.

Deborah serves on two advisory boards in the nation’s capital: Washington DC Police Foundation and National Museum of Women in the Arts. She recently completed a six-year term on Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. There she served on the national board with retired Marine Corps generals. She was the first-ever board representative from Arizona.

Previously, Deborah served on Harvard University’s Women’s Leadership Board and currently belongs to many organizations including International Women’s Forum, Arizona State University’s Women in Philanthropy, Pat Tillman Veteran’s Center, Arizona Charter 100 and others.

The 2019 Children’s Museum Gala is co-chaired by Cathy Brown and Rebecca Light and takes place on March 9, 2019 at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. This exciting evening begins at 6pm with cocktails, hors-d’oeuvres, and a silent auction inside the Museum. Festivities continue outside with a live auction and dinner under the stars. Entertainment will include interactive music from Frank Thompson from AZ Rhythm Connection.  Following dinner, guests are invited to an after-party, featuring a dessert reception and music to dance the night away in the Museum’s trendy event space, The Monroe. The evening will be emceed by the amazing auctioneer Bobby D. Ehlert of Call To Auction.

Proceeds directly benefit the Museum’s Every Child Program which provides free or reduced rate Museum access to families battling financial, emotional or circumstantial challenges. Over 50,000 people visit the Museum annually through this program.
