ASPIRE Academy Students Take First Prize at ASU Cryptorally Competition

Students from ASPIRE Academy took home first place this past weekend at Arizona State University’s annual Cryptorally Competition!

Cryptology is the science of making and breaking codes and ciphers. It is an important field of study today, as it helps to protect personal, financial, proprietary, and defense-related information.

At the competition, hosted by ASU’s School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, students had to solve a series of encrypted messages in a scavenger hunt across ASU’s campus that spanned approximately 3.5 miles. This year, 10 teams competed in the competition. Eighth-grade ASPIRE students Joshua Turley, Kiran Means, and Akshay Venkatachalam came in first place.

At ASPIRE, Cryptorally is an extracurricular codes and ciphers club that teaches students historical code and cipher systems, and the mathematics behind the codes and ciphers, in preparation for the Cryptorally Competition.

In 2013, ASU began offering a Junior Cryptorally Competition specifically for middle school students. The Cryptorally Club is hosted by Susanna Fishel, Associate Professor from ASU’s School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and is sponsored by Ariel Roller, ASPIRE Advanced and Honors Math and Math Explorations PBL Teacher, and Patricia Radke, ASPIRE Social Studies, Theater, and Sewing PBL Teacher.

Congratulations to the three ASPIRE Academy students for their hard work and dedication leading up to and during the Cryptorally Competition!
