The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FoJ) was started when Jaclyn Murphy was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. Her wish was to help sick children connect with a team to show them love, support, friendship, and give them a sense of belonging. FoJ aims to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with local teams, clubs and community groups who make them an honorary team member.
The Padre’s newest team member, Wyrik Wile, was diagnosed with Moyamoya Disease at a very young age. Now, thirteen years old, he had a stroke at age two and brain surgery to give him a new artery at age three. Unfortunately, the artery is not providing Wyrik with the amount of blood flow he requires. He remains in danger of strokes in the future and tragically, there is no cure for this disease. Wyrik is a huge sports fan and particularly loves the teams from the San Francisco because his doctors at Stanford gave him tickets when they could. While Wyrik cannot play contact sports he does play, and loves, basketball and running track.
FoJ matches children based on the culture of the entire team, geography, and other influential factors, versus by a sport. The team environment provides the adoptee a happy place where they can go and be a part of something bigger. According to Friends of Jaclyn, “This is not a temporary activity which concludes after the season is over. We truly believe in adoption for life.” Marcos de Niza’s head baseball coach, Steve Schuck, has dedicated himself to developing a strong sense of community and giving back to others in his program. “We are honored to welcome Wyrik to our team and know he will make a bigger impact on our lives than we will make on his,” says Coach Schuck.
MdN Baseball invites all to come out and join in this special occasion.
