About 10 years ago 2 roommates, struggling to pay their San Francisco rent and having some open floor space, had an idea to purchase a few airbeds and offer to rent “alternative lodging accommodation” during a tech conference in town. They threw in breakfast and slightly over a decade later, Air bed and breakfast (AirBnB) is a $25 billion company. 

There is a business start up based in Chandler AZ hoping to become the next big thing in the alternative lodging accommodation market.

“We had sold our Gilbert AZ home and needed to move out before our new Chandler AZ home was ready to move in to.  We wanted to move our belongings into storage and find a nice furnished home we could stay the few months it was going to take until we could move in to our new dream home” said Nick Calvi, founder of TweenerHomes. “We had a heck of a time finding one and I thought it shouldn’t be this difficult.” In talking with others about the experience, he came to find many others who were in between homes (he calls them “Tweeners”) and had a similar experience. 

Arizona, aka the “Valley of the Sun”, has many people who own homes and only stay in the home for a portion of the year. Many of these people had indicated their wish to find a way to offset their mortgage payments when not using the home. These people did not realize their house could be 

generating a cash income the months they were not using it. 

 That is when the “light bulb” moment happened….Let’s create a website that will serve as a “connection” for these two groups of people and create a win-win situation for everyone. allows furnished home owners to set the dates to rent out their home and how much they want to earn. A step by step process guides owners through the property submission process and the property submission is free.  Those people who are in between closing on old home and closing on new home, people who are moving to Arizona and are in between States, or even those people in between remodeling home projects and do not want to be exposed to health hazards, can all benefit from 

Nick stresses the home sharing concept may not be for all. “There are risks in letting someone stay in your home for sure. For one, most regular home insurance policies do not cover homes used as a rental so owners should check and make sure they have adequate insurance overages before allowing any visitors in their home. The platform only allows for 30 day stays. We do not market the homes for rent to vacation seekers. There are plenty of vacation rental websites – we are not one of them.  People desiring to rent out their home should also check to ensure they are in compliance regarding residential rental properties, licenses/permits and transaction privilege tax (TPT) that needs to be collected and remitted to the AZ Department of Revenue link. 

Nick is hopeful this platform will help those who are in between homes and need a furnished monthly home as well as those who own a furnished home with months it is vacant, to generate a cash income and help to offset their mortgage payment. Initial marketing efforts will concentrate on the state of Arizona although Nick feels the concept could eventually branch out to other states.

As far as possibly being the next big thing in alternative home accommodations, Nick asked  if we could do a follow up article in 10 years or so!
