Click It or Ticket and Save Lives

The potential for automated vehicles to help prevent crashes and save lives will soon be the norm. They promise a far safer future on our roadways, yet for now, how do we stay safe? Vehicles have many new safety features that help make crashes avoidable and more survivable, but there’s one technology in today’s cars and trucks that is central to safe driving: the seat belt.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Association’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket national mobilization is increasing awareness about seat belt usage. The campaign runs from May 21 to June 3rd and law enforcement will be making a special effort to issue tickets to motorists not wearing their seat belts. Remember, seat belts remain your first line of defense in a crash and your first step toward safer driving.

On Monday, May 21, Desert Car Care of Chandler supports the Chandler Police Department in this important safety initiative. They come together to remind all Arizonans that you must wear a seat belt if you are in the front seat and anyone ages 5 – 15 must wear a properly-adjusted seat belt, no matter where they are sitting. All law enforcement will have strong presence between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. due to the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during this time.

“The physical act of latching that is done over and over can create malfunctions within the seat belt sensors and child protective seats are also important to check,’ states Frank Leutz, COO Desert Car Care of Chandler. “If you are wondering about your vehicle’s features, feel free to stop in the garage at 95 North Dobson Rd., for a complimentary safety check.”

You may be wondering who needs the most encouragement to buckle up? Tween passengers, 8-14 years old, don’t like to buckle up. Life as a parent is full of compromises, so let’s make seat belt safety for our children NOT up for negotiation. Over the past 5 years, 1,552 kids between the ages of 8 and 14 died in car, SUV and van crashes – of those who died, almost half were unbelted. These deaths are preventable, so please share this life-saving message with your family and remember, ‘NEVER GIVE UP UNTIL THEY BUCKLE UP.

NHTSA shares that Arizona seat belt usage for 2016 was 88.0% and we know that we can reach 100%! Make sure everyone riding in your vehicle is buckled up every time, regardless of how far, fast or familiar your drive may be. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, please plan a wonderful getaway and make sure to buckle up.
