GLSEN Phoenix, the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network, will participate in Give OUT Day, the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ community. The 24-hour online fundraising event unites the LGBTQ community from all 50 states and D.C.  Give OUT Day 2018 takes place on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm Eastern. Last year, Give OUT Day raised over $750,000 to support LGBTQ nonprofits.

Throughout the day-long event, thousands of people make gifts to support a diverse array of LGBTQ nonprofits across the country.

“This year, in these continued challenging political and cultural times, local services and advocacy are needed now more than ever”, stated Roger Doughty, president of Horizons Foundation, the executor of the event. “Give OUT Day will raise funds and visibility for hundreds of participating organizations.”

“Few would have predicted the challenging climate we now find ourselves in, after several years of rapid progress on LGBTQ equality and increased visibility and public education,” continued Doughty. “This year on Give OUT Day, we hope to reach thousands of LGBTQ individuals and our allies to engage in supporting the organizations at the front lines of pride, dignity, justice, and joy ,” concluded Doughty.

GLSEN Phoenix’s goal this year is to raise $7,500 towards our work with Gay-Straight-Transgender Alliance (GSTA) clubs in over 150 schools in the Greater Phoenix area. Funds raises on Give OUT Day will be put towards visits and resources provided in support of these student-led clubs. Our research has shown that these clubs, along with other supports, have a marked effect in improving the safety of LGBTQ students and the general climate in our schools.

“GLSEN Phoenix has both evolved and grown over the last few years. Thanks to Give OUT Day, volunteer led organizations like ours can drum up excitement and mobilize our community to invest in our work each year,” said GLSEN Phoenix Chair, Ricardo Martinez.

“Give OUT Day is one of our biggest fundraising days of the year and the money raised has translated into impact. Just a few years ago we worked with only 24 Gay-Straight Alliances. We now support over 110! Our challenge is now to increase our fundraising to sustain the demand for our support. We hope everyone that can donate, will donate to continue our vital and necessary work to ensure all students can attend schools that are free from bullying, bias, and harassment,” said Martinez.
