10th Annual “Keep Our Planet Neat, Recycle Your Car Seat” event
is collecting expired, old, and damaged car seats for recycling

April 2, 2018, Phoenix—Car seats don’t work forever, and their parts can be recycled if handled properly. Safe Kids Maricopa County is partnering with NARPRO, City of Tempe, and other local organizations to collect old, expired, and damaged car seats, which volunteers will take apart for proper recycling.

Car seat parts break down over time, especially in the hot Arizona sun, which is why old, damaged, and expired car seats are not recommended for reuse or resale. This is especially true for car seats that have been in accidents, as they can have damage that can’t be seen.

The annual collection, now in its tenth year, keeps old, expired, and damaged seats out of vehicles and out of landfills. Last year, nearly 1000 car seats were saved from unsafe use and dumping.

WHO:     Safe Kids Maricopa County and partners including NARPRO and City of Tempe

WHAT:   Initial drop-off period: Safe Kids Maricopa County is hosting its 10th annual car seat recycling event. Individuals can drop off car seats from April 1st through April 25th at designated drop-off sites.
Tempe Zero Waste Day: Car seats collected during the initial drop-off period will form a visible mountain of car seats at the Tempe event; volunteers will break down car seats part-by-part on-site for proper recycling. Residents of Tempe and Guadalupe only may drop off car seats at this event.

WHEN:   Initial drop-off period: April 1st through April 25th (various locations)
Tempe Zero Waste Day: April 28th from 7:00am-1:00pm with media availability

WHERE: Initial drop-off period: Various locations; see table on next page
Tempe Zero Waste Day: Tempe Fire Training Facility, 1340 E. University Dr.

WHY:         Old car seats and those that have been in collisions can have invisible damage, which reduces the safety they provide without parents or caregivers knowing it. This annual event helps those with older, expired, or damaged car seats get rid of them in an environmentally-friendly way.

Drop-off locations:

Maricopa County residents can drop off car seats at any of these locations
from April 1-April 25
