Two Arizona teens are organizing a local student-led protest at the Arizona State Capitol on Saturday, March 24th in response to unabated gun violence, to show support for the victims of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and to show solidarity in demanding meaningful changes in gun control laws. In just three days, the #MarchForOurLives Phoenix Facebook event page already has approximately 2,500 interested in attending or going to the event.
“We encourage EVERYONE to attend,” announced the organizers on the event page, “This is our time to push for a change in gun laws, mental health education, and security in schools. We will be heard and things WILL change.”
One of the student organizers, 16-year-old Samantha Lekberg of Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, was moved to take action after the school shooting in Florida in which a former student opened fire in the school with an AR-15 assault rifle on Valentine’s Day. Seventeen students and staff members were killed and more were injured.
The march in Phoenix will coincide with a national March in Washington, DC on the same date. The organizers of the march in Washington DC have encouraged teens around the country to organize similar marches in their state and local communities.
On Tuesday, celebrity George Clooney and his wife Amal announced they would donate $500,000 to support the March for Our Lives effort to organize for meaningful gun control. “Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School,” Clooney said in a statement. “Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.”
