Student Council leaders from Corona del Sol High School in Tempe recently donated over 1,000 children’s books to Mountain Park Health Center to benefit their Reach Out and Read Program. Mountain Park’s goal is to collect 10,000 books.

The Corona del Sol Student Council sponsored the book drive from January 22nd to February 2nd, collecting new or gently used children’s books.

Mountain Park Health Center is a not-for-profit community health center that serves over 35,000 pediatric patients every year throughout the Phoenix metro area. The center’s philosophy is that no child’s academic success should be limited because they do not have access to books. To help bridge the gap, eahc child is given a new book at their yearly well-child visit. They also want to provide children with books to take home from the waiting room to help build their at-home libraries. The kids and their parents are then encouraged to come back and swap out their used books for new ones at any time.

Reach Out and Read is a program that combines pediatric professionals with parents, their young children, and waiting room reading volunteers to create the best environment possible for literacy success. Volunteers who participate in the program can help in a variety of ways, including launching volunteer book drives for the program, in addition to:

  • Read to children in our clinic waiting rooms.
  • Encourage interaction with children during and after the story.
  • Communicate with parents and/or staff as appropriate.
