Students Strive to “Stuff” a School Bus with Food for United Food Bank

Williams Field High School, home of the Black Hawks in Gilbert, Ariz. is holding its annual “Stuff the Bus” food drive. They literally intend to fill an entire school bus with nonperishable food items to deliver to United Food Bank before Thanksgiving.  This tradition challenges each of the high school’s class levels to try to collect the most food. The winning class receives the honor of riding in a secondary bus to the food bank to help unload the Stuff the Bus donations and tour the warehouse.

This year’s drive runs from October 20 through November 20th.  Through their previous drives, the school has collected a total of nearly 65,000 pounds (32.5 tons) of food that is equivalent to more than 55,300 meals.

“We are so honored to be part of this amazing cause. It’s a great opportunity for our family at Williams Field to give back to the community.” said Steve Tannenbaum, Principal, Williams Field High School.

The bus-load of nonperishable foods will arrive at United Food Bank at a crucial time, helping to stock warehouse shelves heading into the holiday season, when meals are a key part of family traditions.

“It’s really neat to see the enthusiasm these high school students bring to this effort to help those in need throughout our community,” says Dave Richins, United Food Bank CEO. “And the timing is wonderful, helping to fill our shelves heading into the holidays. It makes a real impact in the lives of the people we serve.”

If you’d like to start your own tradition, consider stating a holiday food drive to help United Food Bank. You can get more information at www.unitedfoodbank.org.

United Food Bank (UFB) works with 222 community partners to serve more than 228,000 Arizonans in need living in the East Valley and eastern Arizona and is a member of the Feeding America network.
