The 2018 Flagstaff City Council Election may be a year away, but that doesn’t mean candidates can’t gear up for the impending race.

Adam Shimoni is the latest to announce his run for council. Last year, Shimoni lost his bid for a seat on the Flagstaff City Council by a mere 59 votes (one percent) to Charlie Odegaard. The close call hasn’t stopped Shimoni, who will run again in 2018.

Shimoni has called Flagstaff home since 2005, and he is the founder of Speak Up!– a civic engagement program associated with Friends of Flagstaff’s Future. According to their official Facebook page, Speak Up! aims to educate, empower, and motivate Flagstaff residents to engage with local politics.

Shimoni is a former member of the Friends of Flagstaff’s Future board, and serves as an organizer and youth leader for Ultimate Peace. His work with this nonprofit organization helps to engage youth from different backgrounds to form friendships through the game of ultimate frisbee.

Shimoni graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2011 with degrees in Career and Technology Education and High School Special Education.

His 2018 campaign will focus on increasing affordable housing, water conservation, preservation of surrounding natural habitats and open space, enhancing alternative transportation, maintaining dark skies, cultural respect and sensitivity, and facilitating growth and well-being of local businesses.

Please visit his official campaign website for more information on Shimoni and his plans for City Council.
