A Sahuarita resident is facing animal cruelty charges for his treatment of his dog.

According to a Sahuarita Police Department news release, 70-year-old Brian Daniel attempted to put his dog “down” because he could not afford veterinary bills. His 10-year-old pug was sick and had not eaten in two weeks when Brian beat the dog with a club and choked it before putting the animal in an empty bag.

When officers found the bag, they discovered the dog was still alive, although emaciated and injured. Sahuarita’s Animal Care Officer responded to the scene and took custody of the dog, as well as another dog inside the home that appeared healthy and well-cared for.  Both animals were taken to the Southern Arizona Humane Society, where they are on a medical, investigative hold.

Daniel was booked into the Pima County Jail and faces charges of intentional maltreatment of an animal and animal neglect resulting in physical injury.
