In an email sent to his supporters today, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has announced his candidacy for congress. The email states:
I want you to be the first to know: Today I filed to run for Congress representing Arizona’s ninth district.
It’s been the honor of my life to serve as Mayor of Phoenix. But you and I know that we need representatives in Washington who will fight for our community and protect our most vulnerable.
Arizonans deserve better than what we are getting from this Congress, and there has never been a more consequential time in the fight to protect the middle class. In Congress, I’ll do exactly what we’ve done in Phoenix: deliver real results that improve people’s lives.
I know this race is going to be tough.
Republicans are desperate to win this seat and they’ll spend millions to get it.
Thank you for your consistent support for me as Mayor. I hope to serve you just as well in Congress.
According to the City of Phoenix website, Mayor Stanton took office in 2012. It goes on to say, “By investing in innovation and the biosciences, lifting up local small business, and boosting trade with Mexico, Stanton is leading the way to create an innovation-based, export-driven economy built to last.
