AZ Superintendent Finalist for National Education Award

Dr. Perry Berry, Superintendent of Schools for Queen Creek Unified School District, is one of four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year, as awarded by the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS).

“Dr. Berry is an incredible student advocate and a true example of what our communities need in education leadership,” said Dr. David Brown, NASS Executive Director. “He is a lifelong educator and works tirelessly to strengthen educational opportunities for students in his community.”

Dr. Berry was appointed as the permanent superintendent at Queen Creek USD after serving as interim superintendent for nearly five months. He has 15 years of educational leadership experience and was serving as the district’s assistant superintendent and director of curriculum prior to assuming the superintendent duties.

QCUSD has nearly 7,000 students and is one of the fastest growing districts in Arizona. Six of the district’s eight schools have earned an “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education. QCUSD’s use of cutting edge technology, sound instructional practices and strategic programs have positioned Dr. Berry’s district as one of the strongest in the state. Dr. Berry is committed to maintaining transparency and strong public relations with all stakeholders through the use of social media and video.

“I have learned the value in establishing professional norms and protocols collectively throughout the district,” he said. “The development of these agreed-upon norms and protocols help people work efficiently and create common ground when working together.”

Dr. Berry says he sees today’s superintendent as a leader who can have a positive impact on the advancement of student opportunity.

“I truly believe in continuous district improvement, and the superintendent ensures initiatives and change reflect the specific needs of the students being served. The success of the Queen Creek District is directly linked to our ability to remain focused on student performance, and I am honored to serve so many amazing educators,” he said.

Named NASS Superintendent of the Year award recipients were Dr. Cedrick Grey of Jackson, Mississippi and Dr. Timothy Purnell of Somerville, New Jersey.

Dr. Nikki Woodson, Superintendent of Schools for Metropolitan School District-Washington Township in Indianapolis, joins Berry as a finalist for this prestigious award.
