NAU Sweeps All-Sports Trophy Award

Northern Arizona University student athletes and staff have a reason to smile: for the fifth time in school history, NAU has swept the 2017-18 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy award.

There’s no doubt the Lumberjacks’ have had a successful season in the sporting arena, with the men’s cross country team securing their second straight NCAA National Championship as well as their 27th Big Sky title.

Last fall, the football team remained at the top of the standings for most of the season, before tying for third place overall in the league. The Lumberjacks earned an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.

In track and field, the men’s team took home its seventh straight indoor title before securing its sixth conference championship in seven years.

The victories didn’t stop there, with the men’s tennis program placing second in the league and finishing in the top two of the standings for the second season in a row. Overall, NAU Athletics had five of their programs finish in the top three in their respective standings.

The Men’s All-Sports Trophy marks the fifth straight and 15th overall for NAU.

The Northern Arizona women’s teams celebrated four Big Sky championships during the past school year, including their Big Sky cross country team title for the second year in a row and 20th in school history. On the tennis courts, the Lumberjacks were undefeated      11-0 in conference play, securing consecutive league regular-season championships. The women’s track and field team won their second straight indoor championship, marking 13 titles overall and completing the sweep of the indoor and outdoor championships. In the outdoor season, NAU took home its third title in as many seasons and 12th overall.

On the golf course, the NAU squad finished fourth at the conference championship, making it 13 straight seasons they have placed in the top four spots. NAU women’s placed fifth overall in volleyball and soccer, moving on to the conference tournament in both sports. This meant the NAU women had six teams in the top five of their respective sports, helping them earn their eighth overall All-Sports Trophy. They won last season as well.
