Amitav Ghosh to Speak at NAU

Join the Northern Arizona University Asian Studies for an informative, interdisciplinary talk on climate change and the need for better methods of communication for the future of our planet.

On Thursday, March 23rd, international author Amitav Ghosh will present his free, public lecture The free, public lecture: “War, Race and Empire in the Anthropocene: Some Occluded Aspects of Climate Change.”

This free event is open to students and the public, and the Flagstaff community is encouraged to attend this enlightening conversation on the very real problem of climate change and environmental concerns.

Amitav Ghosh, recognized for his novel on climate change and the unthinkable titled The Great Derangement, will speak on Western imperialism as a driving force behind climate change. He will also address sustainability, capitalism, renewable energies and carbon taxes, and the role all of these things play in our future. Ghosh is recognized as one of the world’s foremost intellectuals and writers, and he will address the need to be more inclusive when communicating about a warming planet. In his lecture, he will examine society’s inability and unwillingness to grasp the scale and violence of climate change in literature, history and politics.

The event begins at 4 pm and ends at 6:30 pm and will be held at the NAU International Pavilion.

Ghosh’s fiction and nonfiction work are utilized many courses across at the University. The Indian native has won numerous awards for his work, which has been translated into more than 20 languages and featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic.

Thursday’s event will include a question and answer session and a book signing. Community members can register and download a designated parking pass to this event by going to nau.edu/guest.
